The castle of Pals is a border castle from the 9th century located in the old core of Pals, in the Baix Empordà. The keep of the old castle is preserved, known as the Torre de las Horas due to the belfry built in the 15th century.
The castle is documented in the year 889 in a decree from the Carolingian king Odón, related to the Monastery of Sant Pau de Fontclara, where it is mentioned by the name of the castle of Mont Aspre. In the year 994, the counts of Barcelona and Girona, Ramón Borrell and Ermesenda, donated it, along with the church of San Pedro, to the diocese of Girona.
