The approximately 1792 m high Fuenfría Pass / Puerto de La Fuenfría crosses the Sierra de Guadarrama. In earlier times, it connected the Roman cities of Segobriga and Titulcia, thus linking the fertile high plains of Old and New Castile; today, the gravel road is closed to regular cars and can only be used as a walking or biking path; in winter, snow closures often occur.
