Ebro Valley

Description

The Ebro Valley or Ebro Depression is a wide region in the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula through which the Ebro River flows. The Ebro originates in the Cantabrian Mountains and empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The Ebro Valley is bounded by the Pyrenees to the north, the Iberian system to the south, and the Coastal Catalan mountain range to the east.
The Ebro River depression is located around this river, that is, in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. From the Sierra de Híjar to Tortosa, it has an approximate area of 40,000 km² and a length of 840 km. It stretches from west to east through the autonomous communities of Cantabria, eastern Castilla y León in the provinces of Burgos and Soria, southern Basque Country in Álava, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón, Catalonia, and northern Valencia Community in the province of Castellón, ending at the Mediterranean Sea. To the north are the Pyrenees, to the east it borders the Coastal Catalan ranges, and to the south and west with the Iberian system. The depression has an average height of 200 meters above sea level, which stands out against the great elevations that surround it. At the mouth of the river is the Ebro delta, a protected space with the Ebro Delta Natural Park. It has deposits of marine and continental conglomerates, thick in the mountainous edges and thinner in the center of the depression: sandstones, marls, gypsum, salines, and limestones. The variety in the hardness of the materials and the arid climate have led to different forms of relief. The Ebro River is situated on the fault between the Iberian Peninsula and the European continent coinciding with the bed of an ancient sea, later converted into a lake, which intermittently separated the Iberian island, and the Iberian peninsula joined to Africa, from Europe.
