Real Instituto Jovellanos is the name of one of the oldest educational centers in Spain. It was created in Gijón by Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos as one of the enlightened projects he carried out in the Principality of Asturias. The idea of creating an educational center focused on mining and maritime studies arose amidst the projects linked to the exploitation of the mines that were beginning to open in the coal deposits of the Asturian mining basin, along with the construction of a road that would connect it to the port of Gijón.
