In the fertile valley , at the foot of the limestone cliff with Arcos de la Frontera on top, the river Guadalete winds around it like a ribbon. Here the river Guadelete is closed by the Arcos dam, built in 1966. This creates a reservoir with a capacity of 14 hm3.
The reservoir is used for irrigation, fishing and water sports. In 2014, an artificial beach suitable for swimming was created near the Mesón de la Molinera urbanization.
Located almost entirely in the Spanish province of Cádiz, the Guadalete River rises in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park at an altitude of about 1,000 meters , and flows for 172 kilometers into the Bay of Cádiz north of the city. The river's name comes from the Arabic expression وادي لكة (Wadi lakath) which means "River of Oblivion" .
