The market is located in the building built on the former convent of San Francisco, which was acquired from the state after the confiscation of Mendizabal.
The foundation stone was laid on June 29 , 1873 . It is one of the oldest food markets in the province of Cádiz.
The facades are made of stone and decorated with glazed ceramics on which the fretwork used in the construction is drawn.
The main entrances and gates still have their original iron grilles , and the main entrance is accessed from Calle Parada y Barreto via a beautiful walkway lined with orange trees.
The Mercado Central de Abastos is mainly divided into three areas: meat, fish and fruits and vegetables.
The interior of the building currently houses 115 stalls.
De Markt has four cold stores in the cellars , where the perishable products of the merchants can be stored.
