The hospital was founded by HM Queen Victoria Eugenia and inaugurated on 31 January 1933.
The purposes proposed by the Red Cross for this building at the time were (according to a report prepared by the architect who designed the project, Juan de Cárdenas):
Hospitalization of poor patients , men and women, of a surgical nature, in a pavilion that, with all the guarantees of hygiene, safety and comfort, has real independence but communication with the operating room and outbuildings.
Pharmacy, for free help to poor patients, without hospitalization, completely independent of the hospital and sanatorium.
Sanatorium, for aid in diseases of a surgical nature , of more or less wealthy patients, who shall pay for aid and shelter the sum agreed upon by the Assembly.
