Le Quesnoy originated on a slight elevation between the Rhonelle and the Écaillon, two tributaries of the Scheldt. The town is situated as if at the edge of the Ardennes. It was one of the good towns of the county of Hainaut, surrounded by a wall and a moat since the 12th century. Picard was traditionally spoken in the town, but it was sometimes also referred to by the Flemish name Kesenet or Kiezenet. In 1659, the town was taken by the French under the leadership of Turenne, and Vauban built an even larger fortification, which can still be visited today.
