In the Jardin des Plantes, you find the statue of Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck. The inscription reads: "Fondateur de la doctrine de l''évolution" ("Founder of the doctrine of evolution").
The ideas of Lamarck on evolution were similar to the ideas of the grandfather of Charles Darwin, Erasmus Darwin. Charles came up with an alternative, and scientifically accepted evolution theory.
