Monistrol-sur-Loire is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Loire. The municipality had 8,875 inhabitants on January 1, 2019. The place is part of the arrondissement of Yssingeaux. Around the year 900, there was already a parish in Monistrol. It was entrusted with relics of Saint Marcellin. Around the year 1000, a fortress was built on a height above the church. In the middle of the 12th century, a new Romanesque church was built, parts of which can still be seen in the current church. The lord of Monistrol was from 1270 the bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay, who regularly resided in Monistrol in the bishop's castle. This 13th-century castle was expanded in the 15th and 17th centuries.
