Provins has retained its medieval appearance and is known for the city walls dating from that time. These walls are a total of 1200 meters long with 22 towers. The Tour César dates back to the 12th century. It is the only known hexagonal keep on a square base. The tower is covered and houses bells. Furthermore, in Provins is the Hostellerie de la Croix D'Or from 1264-1270, the oldest hospitality establishment in France. There is still a restaurant located there. The town used to be an important livestock market.
