Situated in the valley of Laignes, Ricey-Bas, Ricey-Haut, and Ricey-Haute-Rive form the famous village of Les Riceys, which unites the traditions of Champagne and Burgundy and continues to surprise. It has carefully preserved a remarkable heritage and has been beautifully restored: along the narrow alleys framed by dry stone walls that serve as beautiful homes for the winemakers, built from blocks of hard limestone, three churches classified as Historical Monuments, two castles, nine chapels, and eight historical washing places! The Ricetons are skilled builders, with tradition saying that many of them worked on the construction of the basins of the Palace of Versailles.
Les Riceys is the primary wine-producing commune in all of Champagne with 870 hectares. It is also the only village in Champagne with no less than three Appellations d’Origine Controlee.
It owes its reputation to its famous Rosé des Riceys, a rare wine chosen by Louis XIV, of which very few people, although much is said about it, have been able to taste the delicate scent of wildflowers, violets, and hazelnuts. In the best years, the annual production does not exceed 80,000 bottles.
