Nieul-sur-Mer is a municipality in western France with 5,859 inhabitants in the Charente-Maritime department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It belongs to the La Rochelle arrondissement and the Lagord canton. The residents refer to themselves as Nieulais. Nieul-sur-Mer is located at the estuary of the Sèvre Niortaise to the Atlantic, about five kilometers north of La Rochelle. Nieul-sur-Mer is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Marsilly to the north, Saint-Xandre to the east, Puilboreau to the southeast, Lagord to the south, and L'Houmeau to the southwest.
