The Varennes Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Fougerolles in the Indre department, Centre-Val de Loire region, France. It was located about 10 km west of La Châtre and 9 km east of Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre on the Gourdon River. The abbey was founded in 1148 by Prince Ebbe II of Déols on the ruins of an older Benedictine establishment. It was a daughter abbey of the Vauluisant Abbey from the Cistercian filiation. It seems to have survived the crisis periods of the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion without major damage. During the French Revolution, it was dissolved and subsequently used for agricultural purposes. From 1901 to 1920, it was a meeting place for various artists and writers such as André Maurois and Roger Martin du Gard.
