In front of Notre-Dame Basilica and at the end of the aisles stands a stone cross erected in 1630 by the inhabitants of Saint-Macaire (or La Réole) to obtain the cessation of the plague. Until the Revolution, the Macarians came in procession on the days of Saint Mark and Pentecost, led by the superior of the Jesuits, then the choir priests, the jurats in full dress and their brotherhoods with their banners.
