A curious fact about the Carrière Wellington near Arras is that during the First World War, this underground quarry served as a shelter and assembly point for as many as 24,000 Allied soldiers, secretly assembled there for a surprise attack on the German lines on April 9, 1917. The tunnels were expanded and connected mainly by New Zealand miners; they even provided the complex with electricity and running water, which was exceptional for that time.
