The Château de Vallon-Pont-d'Arc is a castle located in the eponymous commune in the extreme south of the Ardèche department. The first castle in the city was located on the hill known as Chastelas to the east of the current town. Burned down in 1559 at the beginning of the Wars of Religion, it was rebuilt and then destroyed again by the Protestant troops of the Duke of Rohan in 1628. In 1629, after the capitulation of Privas, King Louis XIII freed all the Protestant places in the Vivarais, including Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, and imposed a fine of ten thousand pounds on the Protestant inhabitants and the obligation to build a new castle for the lord of the time, and where he decided to do so.
