The Abbey of Laval Dieu is one of the three churches in the municipality of Monthermé. It originates from an ancient abbey founded in 1128, initially intended for regular canons of the Premonstratensian order under the patronage of Saint Remi.
In the 12th century, Ithier called "the Devout," count of Rethel, founded several abbeys on the lands that belonged to him. Thus, he established the abbey of Laval-Dieu in Monthermé in 1128 with Archbishop Renauld de Martigné, from the Latin Vallis Dei, meaning the Valley of God, the Val Dieu, intended for regular canons of the Premonstratensian order under the patronage of Saint Remi.
