De Abdij van Laval Dieu is een van de drie kerken van de gemeente Monthermé. Ze is voortgekomen uit een oude abdij die in 1128 werd opgericht en oorspronkelijk bestemd was voor reguliere kanunniken van de orde van Prémontré onder de bescherming van de heilige Remi.
In de 12de eeuw stichtte Ithier, genaamd "de Vrome", graaf van Rethel, verschillende abdijen op de gronden die aan hem toebehoorden. Zo stichtte hij in Monthermé in 1128, samen met aartsbisschop Renauld de Martigné, de abdij van Laval-Dieu, van het Latijnse Vallis Dei, de Vallei van God, de Val Dieu, bestemd voor reguliere kanunniken van de orde van Prémontré onder de bescherming van de heilige Remi.
