La Abadía de Laval Dieu es una de las tres iglesias del municipio de Monthermé. Proviene de una antigua abadía que fue fundada en 1128 y que estaba originalmente destinada a canónigos regulares de la orden de Prémontré bajo la protección de san Remi.
En el siglo XII, Ithier, apodado "el Piadoso", conde de Rethel, fundó varias abadías en las tierras que le pertenecían. Así, fundó en Monthermé en 1128, junto con el arzobispo Renauld de Martigné, la abadía de Laval-Dieu, del latín Vallis Dei, el Valle de Dios, el Val Dieu, destinada a canónigos regulares de la orden de Prémontré bajo la protección de san Remi.
