The Benedictine Abbey of Sainte-Scholastique in Juvigny-sur-Loison is located in a bend of the Loison River on the edge of the Woëvre Forest and the borders of France with the Holy Roman Empire, between the towns of Montmédy, Stenay, and Damvillers.
According to tradition, the abbey was founded in 874 by Richildis, the second wife of Charles the Bald. The relics of Saint Scholastica of Nursia, revered as the sister of Benedict of Nursia, were brought here on June 6 of that year. However, they were forgotten afterward and were "rediscovered" by the abbess in the late 11th century "through divine revelation."
