The Rhine Bridge Breisach spanned the Rhine at Breisach in the Middle Ages. It was already in existence in 1263 and was the only permanent Rhine bridge between Basel and the North Sea in the High Middle Ages. An illustration from 1555 shows it resting on piles, without a railing and without a drawbridge. On the first nearby Rhine island, there was a four-sided gate tower in 1555 that guarded and defended the access to the bridge. Similar to the Lange Bruck in Strasbourg, it utilized a Rhine island for crossing the river and had a bridgehead on the opposite bank.
