It is one of the 56 bell towers in Belgium and France that have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The bell tower is a modest creation, fifty-four meters high, with a Flemish Lion atop it. Every Monday, the carillon of fifty bells spreads its sounds over the square and the city at the foot of the tower. Although the bell tower seems to be a beautiful Gothic structure at first glance, it actually has a very recent appearance, which is not so strange since it is now just over forty years old. This building was, like many others in the area, destroyed and only rebuilt in a simpler version in 1961. In the nostalgic ode "Tot Sint-Winoksbergen" and its 'Groenberg', the Flemish poet Bert Peleman celebrates the 'wondrous resurrection' of the bell tower as a symbol of the rich and glorious past of Sint-Winoksbergen.
