Saint-Jacques Gate in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

In the Basque Country, 55 km southwest of Biarritz, St-Jean-Pied-de-Port owes its name to its location at the foot of the Cize passes, including the famous pass of Roncesvalles, with "port" meaning pass.
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, the Porte Saint Jacques is the historic entry point for pilgrims on their way to Compostela, who, coming from the Madeleine district of St-Jean-le-Vieux, cross Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port towards Roncesvalles. It offers a lovely view of the Arradoy hill, which was once a stone quarry and is now planted with vines under the Irouléguy designation.
A quick glance at a first-rate sports complex, then in front of the Jai Alai, a large building below where Cesta Punta (Basque Pelota) is played, there is a bas-relief of Juan de Huarte, a physician and philosopher who was a pioneer in career guidance.
