At the foot of the Château de Pau, the Parliament of Navarre and the Gave de Pau lie the contemporary gardens of the Conseil Général des Pyrénées Atlantiques.
A first garden of stones and water, punctuated by palm trees where paths and rectilinear basins follow one another. The water built, parallel to the Heïd canal which crosses it from east to west. Completed in 2000, this carpet garden is to be admired overhanging from the Boulevard des Pyrénées from where its full splendour can be seen. It is connected to the walks called "Les sentiers du Roy" (The King's Paths) linking the castle to the lower town.
Come and admire in spring the shrubs of heather earth: rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and hydrangeas. Have fun tracking down the phlox, the alchell or the primrose. Also take the time to take a look at the modern and daring architecture of the Hôtel du Département.
