The Tranchée de Calonne is a 25-kilometre long road linking Verdun to Hattonchâtel. Traced in the 18th century on the orders of Louis XVI's minister, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, it was the scene of violent fighting during the First World War. Enlisted in the 288th RI as a lieutenant, Alain Fournier, author of the Grand Meaulnes was reported missing near Dommartin la Montagne on 22 September 1914. His body and those of his comrades were found in 1991 in a clearing in the woods of Saint Rémy, 200 metres from the route of the Calonne Trench. Alain Fournier is now buried in the national cemetery of Saint Rémy la Calonne.
