The abbey is located in the heart of the forest of Compiègne, in the village of Saint-Jean-aux-Bois. It was founded in 1152 as an abbey of Benedictine nuns by Queen Adelaide of Savoy (widow of Louis VI). In 1220, the abbey is endowed with a new church of Gothic style... The abbey church was transformed into a parish church in the 18th century.
The church remains today as well as the chapter house and the fortified gate (the only remains of the abbey).
