From the top down, from La Chaux-du-Dombief to Ménétrux en Joux, the river "Le Hérisson" will flow more or less peacefully:
The Saut Girard is the first waterfall of the Hérisson, the first of a series of 7 waterfalls and 31 jumps starting from Ilay.
With a height of 35 m, it takes its name from a monk Girard who, faced with the dissolute life of his companions, put an end to his life by throwing himself off the top of the waterfall. Also called Saut de la Forge because the site, from the Middle Ages to 1911, produced energy for a clouterie.
As for the Hérisson river, it is fed by the lakes of Ilay and Bonlieu and owes its name to its origin "Yrisson" which means sacred water.
You can reach the Saut Girard waterfall on foot, by an easy path, in 5 minutes, by parking at the Saut Girard - Lac d'Ilay car park, in the hamlet of Ilay, in the commune of La Chaux-du-Dombief.
You can also enjoy the view of the waterfall from the Saut Girard viewpoint, located on the road between the hamlet of Ilay and the commune of Bonlieu.
There are several possibilities for discovering all or part of the Hérisson waterfalls: don't hesitate to ask for information at a tourist office or consult the website www.haut-jura-grandvaux.com
In order to guarantee the landscape beauty of the site, few rubbish bins are installed on the route. We count on your responsibility to take away your rubbish and participate in the preservation of the site. Thank you in advance.
