The most famous artist from Colmar is Auguste Bartholdi. This artist has, among others, the Statue of Liberty in New York City and some other famous statues in France. According to some sources, he looked to his mother for the inspiration for the face of the Statue of Liberty. In Colmar there are several statues of Bartholdi. In Colmar, the 100th anniversary of Bartholdi's death was commemorated in several ways. A lasting reminder of this is the twelve meter high replica of the Statue of Liberty that was placed on a roundabout just outside the city. In Colmar you can also find the Bartholdi museum.
The image in the photo is the Schwendi Fountain, this image was designed by Bartholdi at the end of the nineteenth century. The statue and fountain are on the square in front of the former customs office. The man on the fountain is Lazarus von Schwendi, a German army commander and diplomat who was in the service of Emperor Charles V.
