Avenue du Grammont is the legendary finnish of the cycling classic Paris-Tours. One of the most legendary arrivals is that of Richard Virenque in Paris-Tours in 2001. After no less than 12 km he escapes from the peloton. Jacky Durand jumps along. They ride together for more than 200 km ahead of the peloton. Then Richard Virenque jumps off alone. On the Avenue du Grammont he is only a few seconds ahead of an oncoming peloton. But he wins by several meters.
The pre-history to this win is at least as remarkable. A few years earlier, Richard Virenque was caught doping and spit out by the entire French population. Patrick Lefèvre took him into his cycling team after serving his sentence. And some time later, the former top climber achieved this on the flattest classic in France.
