On October 10, 1921, the municipal council, chaired by Mayor Joseph JACQUEMIN, discussed the model for the proposed monument to honor the 63 children of the municipality who had died during the First World War and to immortalize their memory.
The project, designed by local sculptor Louis MOREL , was approved.
The location was chosen at the "Place de l'Église", now renamed "Place du Général de Gaulle".
The bronze statue was made by Mr. Louis MOREL. The story goes, without official mention, that it is his self-portrait.
It is 1.90 meters high and depicts a "poilu" , with his weapon at his feet, keeping watch.
The monument was unveiled on Sunday, July 22, 1923 after a religious ceremony performed by Canon CHAMBRILLON, Archpriest of Bar-sur-Seine.
