The hamlet of Waldeck, part of the municipality of Eguelshardt, lies at the foot of the ruins of the castle of the same name. The Waldeck estate is mentioned as early as the year 960, but not yet its castle, which was built towards the end of the 13th century. In the course of its history it became the property of various lordships.
In 1605, markers were put in place in the region to mark the new border between the duchy of Lorraine and the county of Hanau. Some of them are still visible today, not far from the hamlet of Waldeck, along the Hanau forest road.
