In July 1896, a German company stationed in Metz carried out manoeuvres and built a wooden bridge. Sculptors carved a commemorative plaque in the sandstone to leave a trace of their passage. They also dug a "chamber" in a nearby rock. Could they have imagined that during the 1939/45 war, Russian soldiers, prisoners in Ban Saint-Jean, would escape and take refuge in this "cave"? The inhabitants of the area brought them food in solidarity.
