The Champagne float
On September 13, 1944, heavy fighting opposed here the 2nd AD of General Leclerc on the march to Strasbourg to the German 112th Panzerbrigade. Colonel Langlade's tactical group, whose CP had been installed since the day before at the Hospice St Joseph, was taken back by important enemy armoured elements. It was while opposing them that the Sherman tank "Champagne" of the 12th African Fighter Regiment commanded by the New Applicant, was hit by 2 shells which set it on fire. The intervention of the American air force allowed the 2nd AD to win the battle of Dompaire and the final liberation of Ville-sur-Illon.
