Hirtzfelden appeared around 735 under the name Hiruzfeld. The name originates from two words: Hirsch (deer) and Feld (field). Numerous mounds excavated in the Rothlaible forest attest to a Roman presence, perhaps linked to a crossroads between the Roman Burnhaupt-Brisach road and the Celtic Basel-Eguisheim road. In the 8th century, the village was donated to the abbey of Murbach. It later passed to the Habsburgs and became part of the Landser seigneury, a lower bailiwick with Ottmarsheim as its administrative center. The village was taken by the Baslers in 1446 and occupied by the Lucerne in 1468. In the 18th century, Hirtzfelden came under the jurisdiction of Ensisheim.
The Hirtzfelden area was once occupied by shepherds (Hirtza) from the south of the region. They used to gather once a year in a small, isolated chapel, which today lies beneath the steeple of the present-day church. From the 16th to the 17th century, the inhabitants led a pastoral and agricultural life. Among the bourgeois weavers, dyers, blacksmiths, innkeepers and farmers were the Jeckers, who arrived from Switzerland in 1645
