The monument is dedicated to the military victims of the French colonial campaigns of the 19th century: Madagascar, Senegal, Crimea, Tonkin, Algeria, Tunisia and "other colonies", as well as to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
The First World War is also mentioned, but the Monument aux Morts de la Ville de Boulogne sur Mer is more specifically dedicated to this and later conflicts.
Consecrated on 18/09/1898 Edmond Lormier, sculptor; Durenne A., foundryman; and Decroix, architect.
