Villa Foncin - Cavalaire-sur-mer

In 1894, geologist Pierre Foncin built the villa on a 15-hectare site of unspoilt nature (cork oaks, holm oaks, maquis) near Le Dattier, also known as "Casteu dou Souleu" ("castle of the sun").

The striking white building stands 128 m above sea level and serves as a landmark for sailors and pilots and has been featured on navigational charts since the early 20th century.

The view from the terrace offered Foncin a panoramic view of Pointe du Dattier , the Îles d'Hyères and Cavalaire-sur-Mer which he used to draw maps and geographical sketches of the region. At the villa he regularly gave lessons, lectures and hospitable receptions for intellectuals.

In 1977, Mireille Foncin – daughter of Pierre – donated the villa and the surrounding grounds to the Conservatoire du Littoral . The domain has since served as an educational nature conservation area, preserving native vegetation such as cork oak, maquis and a rich ecosystem. Guided tours are organised every week on the history of the building, coastal protection and biodiversity.
