PR 111 "The Royal Escape"

1/ With your back to the lodging "Le pigeonnier", go straight down. After the washhouse, cross the two roundabouts and arrive at D 643.

2/ Cross it (caution) and take the street des Folies in front. At the fork, [ > possibility of a round trip to the Virgin of Tivoli and the panorama 150 m on the right] turn left onto a small road lined with old dry stone walls. Stay on the paved path, pass near an antenna [ > viewpoint] and at the next intersection, continue straight for 2.2 km along the old Roman road beside cultivated fields [ > blockhaus and viewpoint].

3/ At the T, take a left [ > viewpoint]. After 700m, descend to the right via a grassy path. Arrive in Thonnelle via the alley of the Grands Jardins. [ > commemorative plaque, residence where Louis XVI was to spend the night during his flight].

4/ Cross D 643 and descend straight ahead on the street de l'Église. At the fork, continue straight on the street de l'Église, cross the Thonne. At the sheltered picnic table, turn left onto the paved path, passing several agricultural sheds; the ascent is steep for about 1 km.

5/ At the fork, take the right path entering the woods, heading toward the Harauchamp farm. Before the "private road" sign, veer left onto a forest path. Follow the markings closely. After 650 m, turn right. At the T, go left and continue straight. [ > Nicasse cross].

6/ Exit the woods and go straight between the cultivated fields [ > viewpoint]. In the bend, leave the sandy path and descend straight ahead. At the T, take a left on a paved path. Pass by the cemetery, continue in the Bauclin alley lined with lime trees. Arrive at Thonne-les-Prés. At the intersection, take the street de Roses to the left. Before the church, descend right and pass under the railway. At the emergence with the street de la Barrière, take a left, then another left to reach the Grande Rue. Before the viaduct, take a right on the street de Benoist, pass by the entrance to the castle, then go under the viaduct for the first time [ > viaduct and castle]. Turn right, cross the Thonne and follow the viaduct. At the T, go right on D 110 (caution) and go under the viaduct for the second time. Follow the castle's enclosing wall (caution, turns with little visibility).

7/ At the statue of Joan of Arc, leave the road and ascend left for 600 m to D 110d. Cross (caution) and continue straight on a grassy path towards the citadel of Montmédy. At the path's exit, cross a small road, continue straight, pass in front of a cemetery and turn right onto the paved road to return to the starting point.
