In September 1914, at the beginning of the First World War, Senlis suffered German reprisals following fire from the French rearguard against the occupying troops. One hundred and ten houses on the rue de République and the rue Bellon were burnt down, including the courthouse and the train station. Eugène Odent, mayor of the town, was shot dead along with five other citizens
