Nuits-Saint-Georges, a town of 5,700 inhabitants, is world-renowned for its wines and its illustrious figures who have marked history with their know-how, both scientific and artistic. At the time of the arrival of the railway in 1849, and to avoid confusion with another Nuits located in Yonne on the same line, the PLM company designated Nuits by the name "Nuits-sous-Beaune." The Nuitons insisted in 1892 on the right to add instead the name of its most famous, but above all, the oldest vintage dating back to the year 1000: "Saint-Georges," alongside Vosne becoming Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle becoming Chambolle Musigny.
