The rocks of Solutré, Vergisson, and Mont de Pouilly are tilted eastward, due to the tilting of the limestone plateau during the Alpine uplift. Originally covered with forests, their summits are today covered by a specific environment called calcicole lawns, vast expanses of short grasslands covering poor and shallow soil. These areas host a great biological diversity, characterized by the presence of rare species and remarkable plant associations, and recognized at the European level by their classification in the Natura 2000 network.
