The Route
Integrated into a cross-border itinerary from Offenburg, this cycle route leaves Strasbourg heading south along a cycle path developed alongside the ILL, the river that flows through the Alsatian metropolis.
Arriving at the confluence of the ILL and the Bruche canal, our cycling route follows the shaded banks of this small canal and connects to the foothills of the Vosges and the Alsace vineyard cycle route in Molsheim.
The canal was built by Vauban to transport sandstone from the Vosges intended for the construction of the fortifications of Strasbourg from 1682 to 1687 and includes eleven former locks.
Up to 950 boats were recorded on the canal in 1782, and it was used until 1938.
