Two possible alternatives based on this route:

1) Bypass of La Bresse & Route de Vologne
. after reaching the summit of the Grand Ballon, follow the current route (Route des Crêtes) for 20 km.
. take the exit La Bresse - Wildenstein (route D5B3 - Route des Américains, which becomes D34A - Route de Bramont)
. to the T-junction with the D34D (Route de Vologne)
. turn right here, direction Col de la Schlucht.
. continue on the D34D for 9 km, until it reaches the junction with the D417.
. here begins the descent to Munster by the Schlucht pass
=> This alternative is 5 km longer, but offers 350 hm more.

2) descent to Munster from Le Markstein
. after reaching the summit of the Grand Ballon, follow the current route (Route des Crêtes) for 11 km.
. here you can take the exit for Sondernach - Munster (D27)
. follow this route in a descending line to Munster. 23km from Munster from the exit
=> this alternative is 14 km shorter. About the same number of altimeters.
