Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater lake (70 km²) in Great Britain and was formed by a glacier about ten thousand years ago. The lake, which is 38.6 km long, is very accessible, making it one of the most popular day trip destinations for Glasgow residents. For them it is only an hour's drive. You will soon notice that it can be busy when you drive along the A82. The west side is overflowing with tourist and recreational facilities. Loch Lomond is surrounded by a few attractive villages, such as Balloch and Luss. Loch Lomond literally leans towards the Trossachs National Park, of which it is also a part. The area has great scenic value and is at its most colorful in autumn. None other than Sir Walter Scott made the region famous; in his stories Rob Roy and The Lady of the Lake, the Trossachs are the setting.
