It is situated next to the Nevern, a small river that flows north towards Newport Bay and the land promontory Dinas Island, which is accessed by the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Two kilometers to the east lies the portal tomb Carreg Coetan Arthur, and just a little further lies Berry Hill Fort. Ancient descriptions speak of a number of menhirs that stood around the site.
Cerrig y Gof consists of five circularly arranged individual chambers. This form of multiple chambers is unique to Pembrokeshire. The only counterpart to Cerrig y Gof is found in the site of Mull Hill on the Isle of Man, where six chambers are arranged in a circle.
