AzureThe history of Kylemore - both of the castle and of the abbey - is a very remarkable story. The twist of fate experienced by the inhabitants, from romance and happiness to despair and courage, together form a fascinating history that stretches over 150 years. Kylemore has been inhabited by a religious community of Benedictine monks since 1920. They settled here after their abbey in Ypres (B) was destroyed during the First World War. Since their arrival in Kylemore, the monks founded the internationally renowned girls' boarding school and began the restoration of the abbey, Gothic church and gardens to restore the estate to its former glory.
