W7-8: QUATTRO FONTANE
PHOTO 1: The Arno, with the lion as a symbol of the city of Florence
This intersection of straight streets is located in a strategic place. At the end of three of them, an obelisk can be seen, namely the one at the Quirinale (W7-1), the obelisk at the top of the Spanish Steps (W6-12), and the one at the back of the Santa Maria Maggiore (W7-13). The fourth arm leads perpendicularly to the Porta Pia.
Two of the four corner fountains were paid for by the Mattei family, who also owned some land here. They had previously also been patrons for the Turtle Fountain (W2-4) that stands in front of their house on the Piazza Mattei.
