The first mention of the church of San Pietro ai Sette Pini dates from 763, on the site where the church now called in Vinculis stands.
The current building was rebuilt in 1072, when the Canons Regular of Augustine were elected, who also provided a cloister and chapter house.[2] The church was consecrated in 1118.
In 1488 the church passed to the Benedictine monks of Olivetan, who managed it until the Leopoldine abolitions at the end of the 18th century.[2] Since then, the church has been a parish of the Archdiocese of Pisa.
The inlaid floor is cosmatesque. A Roman sarcophagus, remains of 12th- and 13th-century frescoes and a 13th-century painted cross on wood attributed to Michael van Baldwin have been preserved.
For a long time, until the defeat of Pisa by Florence, the church housed a document of capital importance for law: the manuscripts of the Digest of Justinian I, the text of the Corpus Juris Civilis. According to some sources, they came from the capture of Amalfi in 1137, or were given to Pisa by Lothair after his defeat.
