After the middle of the 13th century, when the part of the city north of the Arno was completely enclosed by the city walls, fortification continued in the area south of the river, known as Chinzica. This fortification, especially in the southeast, was prompted by the increasing tensions that had developed between the Pisan government and the Florentine Republic.
In the first years of the first Florentine rule (from 1406), some Pisan walls were further strengthened, including the Tower of Stampace, around which a rectangular fortress was built: the chronicles report that it was used as a prison in 1426.
