The Basilica of San Frediano is a Romanesque church from the early twelfth century. The site of the present church has been the site of a religious building since the sixth century AD. The church stands out for its monumental facade with a beautiful mosaic. The mosaic depicts “The Ascension of Christ”. Christ sits in a mandorla carried by two angels. Below are the apostles looking at the scene. What is special is that Mary is missing from the scene. A pointed arch window can be seen on Mary's place.
The inside of the basilica is at least as beautiful as the outside. The monumental interior is beautifully decorated with white marble. Special are Roman chapters that come from an amphitheater. Another special element in the church is the baptismal font from the twelfth century.
